The establishment of the New England Glass Company at East Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Deming Jarves and his associates in 1818 marked the beginning of one of the most successful American glass manufacturers of the 19th and 20th centuries, Libbey Goblet Glassware. The company-now known as Libbey Inc. has operated continuously for 180 years.
The Libbey story began when William L. Libbey joined the company as sales manager in 1870. His son Edward Drummond Libbey joined him as a clerk in 1874, and ten years later became his father's partner. By mid-century the firm had reached its height and was said to be the largest glass plant in the world. Libbey Goblet Glassware. In 1892 the name was changed to The Libbey Glass Company. Through the efforts of Michael Owens, Libbey's first superintendent of production, Libbey revolutionized glassmaking techniques. A worker in glass plants since he was ten years old, Owens pioneered the development of the first automatic glassmaking machine. Libbey's pioneering efforts have also led to the development of machine applied color decorations and the world's first machine made stemware.
In October 1995, Libbey purchased The Syracuse China Company, one of the leading manufacturers of ceramic dinnerware for the foodservice industry. And, in August 1997 Libbey acquired World Tableware, a leading supplier of stainless steel flatware, holloware, buffetware and a variety of accessories and the world renound Libbey Goblet Glassware.
Today, it is widely recognized that Libbey is the leading supplier of tabletop products to the foodservice, industrial and retail markets. Libbey employs over 4,000 people in the United States and Canada and exports to over 100 countries worldwide. Libbey Goblet Glassware.
